There are many related terms, and different people use them in different ways. The words “sketchnote” and “sketchnoting” were coined by the author of The Sketchnote Handbook, designer and illustrator Mike Rohde, back in 2006, but the concepts have been around much longer. Prehistoric people created cave art that preserved a record of events or stories before writing even existed!

I work as a professional graphic recorder and graphic facilitator. In these roles, I use sketchnoting techniques to create images for clients and organizations.
